What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a placement for one or more roots of a tooth. The implant is surgically inserted inside the jawbone so that it is not visible. The implant secures the tooth crown (the functional part of the tooth that is visible), the bridgework, or dentures. There are several ways that we can perform this procedure.
Implants are made of Titanium, a lightweight, sturdy, non-degradable, biocompatible metal that forms a bond with the rest of the mouth. This type of metal is safe and will not cause any health or medical issues.
What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?
There are several personal and medical benefits of dental implants such as:
- Implants offer a permanent solution to missing teeth.
- Implants improve your mouth’s appearance.
- You will be able to eat with less discomfort.
- The bone structure will grower stronger once again.
- Your mouth will benefit from improved oral health and hygiene.
- Unlike dentures, you don’t have to remove implants.
- Implants are durable enough to handle normal eating activity.
Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?
Your teeth provide stimulation for the surrounding bone to maintain its form and density. If you lose a tooth, the bony ridge that contains the tooth socket will slowly deteriorate and lose its density at a rate of 25% during the first year alone. The bone degeneration will continue over the next few years.
Eventually, the jaw bone beneath the ridge will deteriorate as well. In addition, the deterioration can lead to decay, loss of function, pain, and other health problems that can affect the body. So, if you have lost a tooth, then you are a strong candidate for a dental implant. You can schedule a consultation with Dr. Kreyman to discuss what steps you can take to replace the missing tooth with a dental implant.
Our Dental Implant Treatment Process
Dr. Kreyman’s dental team will begin your treatment with a comprehensive examination to determine the approach we need to take to insert the implant. The exam will include a visual inspection of the area and X-rays to get a more in-depth assessment of your mouth’s overall condition.
We then discuss your options for treatment including how we approach the procedure. If we replace an existing tooth, then our objective is to attach the existing crown to the implant. If your tooth is missing, we will have a similar tooth fabricated. The new tooth will have a natural look that matches your current set of teeth. In many cases, most patients can’t tell the difference between the implant and the other teeth.
We will perform a surgical procedure to fit the implant into the jawbone. Once the procedure is complete, it will take two to six months for the implant to fuse with the tissue. Finally, we add the original or fabricated crown to the implant to complete the procedure.
You will also schedule one or more follow-up visits with Dr. Kreyman to ensure that the crown and the implant are still in place and performing well.
